Athirappilly Falls is situated on the border of Athirappillypanchayath ,ChalakudyTaluk ofThrissurdistrictandAyyampuzhapanchayath,AluvaTaluk ofErnakulamdistrict,Keralaon the southwest coast ofIndia. Located on the west-flowingChalakudyRivernear the Vazhachal Forest Division and the Sholayar ranges, this 24-metre (80 ft) waterfall and the nearbyVazhachalFallsare popular tourist destinations. There is another waterfall on the way from Athirappilly toVazhachalFalls, in close proximity to the road and is locally called “CharpaFalls”. Athirappilly Falls is the largest waterfall in Kerala and is nicknamed “TheNiagaraof India”.[1]Controversy about a state-proposed hydroelectric dam on the Chalakudy River above the waterfalls began in the 1990s and has continued through 2011.

DAY: 03 MUNNAR TO THEKKADY

Periyar Tiger Reserve, Thekkady

The very sound of the word Thekkady conjures up images of elephants, unending chains of hills and spice scented plantations. The Periyar forests of Thekkady is one of the finest wildlife reserves in India. Spread across the entire district are picturesque plantations and hill towns that hold great opportunities for treks and mountain walks.

KTDC is operating 1.30 – 2 hours common fixed boating at Periyar Lake, Thekkady which is one of the major attraction there.   At the time of boating, if you are lucky,  you can have a unique experience of viewing wildlife at close from the safety of a boat at the lake.  The probable animals to see are Bison, Gaur, Wild Elephants, Sambhar and a wide variety of birds.
